Messy marketing problems?
I can help.

Not another marketing consultant.

Just a seasoned navigator of the messy middle.

Hi, I’m Jessica Carlson, principal and founder of J. Carlson Creative. I help mission-driven teams get unstuck.

I believe all great work starts with understanding—of your mission and the messes that have been made along the way. So let’s figure it out. We’ll untangle what needs untangling and build something better.

I’ve spent the last two decades working for large hospital systems, global nonprofits, associations, tech companies, and media orgs. I’ve led from the inside and consulted from the outside. I’ve built teams, cleaned up inherited systems, launched new strategies, and kept things moving when it felt impossible.

These days, I plug in where marketing and communication teams need clarity, structure, or just an extra brain to make things work better. That might mean developing brand and content guidelines, cleaning up your tools and processes, supporting your team through change, or tackling the sticky marketing problems no one’s had time for. I live at the intersection of strategy and execution, making sure your communications don’t just check a box, but move your mission forward.

The backstory

I’ve always taken quiet pride in making things work better behind the scenes. Over the years, I saw an obvious pattern: real progress rarely came from a big agency engagement or a sweeping reorg. Usually, all it took was one clear-headed problem solver quietly making things better. I founded J. Carlson Creative to be that kind of partner—the one who steps in where you’re stretched too thin, brings fresh perspective, and follows the thread until the work is actually working.

“But what’s your specialty?”

Brand, content, digital, strategy, systems—I’ve done all of it, sometimes all at once. Not because I set out to be a generalist, but because in every organization I’ve worked with, the same issues kept showing up: internal politics, scattered messaging, outdated tools, inconsistent processes, slow pace of progress. So that’s my specialty: plugging in and fixing what’s slowing you down. Helping teams get out of wheel-spinning mode and (finally) gain forward momentum.

How I like to work

I make friends with a problem. I ask a lot of questions. I basically live in the weeds. But I’m a stubborn believer that every problem can be solved, and I’m often determined to prove it. Your problem becomes my obsession (in a healthy way, I promise.) The end goal is always sustainable progress, solutions your team can run with long after I’m gone.

If we work together…

You won’t get vague recommendations or strategy theater. You will get clear direction, thoughtful questions, and someone who genuinely wants to make your life easier. I’ll tell you what I see, help you figure out what matters most, and create tools or processes that actually make a difference. Also: I will probably fix something you didn’t ask me to, just because it was bothering me.
